 STOP THE KILLING! The facts are cold and the stories are sad - and we are often left wondering "How can a nation as advanced and seemingly compassionate as ours kill, murder, and dispose of over 5 million companion animals each year?" We are told that there are not enough homes for all of these animals, that they must be killed - but facts do not lie. Shelters adoptions make up less than 20% of the total companion pet adoptions in our nation. It is noted that 5 million companion animals are bought through breeders, pet stores, or picked up from local "free to good home" ads placed. The numbers don't lie - 5 million companion animals killed each year / 5 million companion animals placed in homes from sources other than shelters - there are enough homes. A national animal shelter reform must take place - and take place now. For each day that passes - over 13,000 healthy, adoptable companion animals are killed in our shelters.
